To Survive
To survive, you had to give up family,
give up the people you embrace each day,
and hope they live.
Later that is all destroyed.
People watch their own family suffer,
hanging breathless from the gallows.
To survive, you had to endure the anger,
hold what you felt inside,
and hope to not get shot.
Hope to not let your legs give in while working,
and be afraid of the impact of a bullet.
To survive, you had to pray for food.
Nobody knew if their stomachs would be satisfied each day.
Hunger would take over.
The needing for food was mind controlling.
It was a daily challenge that people faced each day.
Starvation ended the lives of many innocent people.
Those who survived were freed physically,
though the savage ways of the Nazis trapped the prisoners mentally forever.
In the end,
they all slowly drifted from the person they knew themselves as.

Men in their bunks.
