The Secret Annex kept many people safe for many years of World War II. Even if they weren't as safe as people in some other countries, they still had a less likely chance of getting caught. Most families had a plan like Anne Frank's family and they went into hiding like they did. The Annex Anne's family was in was a small place, but fit her family, and others. There were many people living there at the time and they all had interesting relationships. Everyone living there went through many emotional changes that caused relationships to go bad and people to start going crazy.
First of all, the Secret Annex was a small place that fit many people inside. It was a separate building, connected to the store by a small room. From the front of the building, it looked like a regular store during the time period. In the small room, there’s a bookshelf. That bookshelf can move to open to a door. Behind the door is The Secret Annex. Behind the door there’s a staircase, and two doors. Behind the door on the left of the staircase is the area the Frank family had stayed in for the two years that they were in hiding. There are three rooms behind that door that are connected. Mrs. Frank and Mr. Franks room, Anne Frank and Mr. Dussel room, and bathroom. At the bathroom, the door to exit that room leads to the beginning room where the staircase is. Up the staircase was where the Van Dann’s were living. It was where Mrs. Van Dann, Mr. Van Dann, and Peter would sleep. The room was a much bigger room than the Franks rooms, so both families would eat and spend their time there. In that room there’s a door that leads to Peter’s room. In Peter’s room there’s a ladder to go to the attic. In the attic, they would just store things there that they had.
In addition, there were many people that lived in the Annex during World War II. There was Anne Frank and her family that contained her, her mother, father and sister. There was also the Van Daan family. They had Mrs. Van Daan, Mr. Van Daan, and their child Peter. There are more, but are less significant and aren't mentioned as much as these are in the book. There were relationships in the Annex that were both healthy and unhealthy. Anne and her mother had a bad relationship. Anne felt that her mother did not understand her like a mother should. Her mom also blamed her for most things. Anne had an interesting relationship with Peter Van Daan. At first she didn't like him very much. She thought he was strange and awkward. Later, she starts liking him, and liking talking to him. She talks about him quite a lot in her later entries.
Finally, the people that were in the Annex for so many years went through many emotional changes. Anne definitely writes about going crazy a few times. She says she misses the outside. The others in there most likely also felt stuck after a while. There are a lot of nice days that she can only see through the window. They couldn't feel fresh air on their skin like others could. Although they were somewhat safer than some others, the Annex was still like a prison for them after a while. That is also what could have caused some of their unhealthy relationships. They were around the same people for those years of war. That brings this topic to how each day the country they were in, Holland, was always closer to entering the war, putting them in even greater danger. That tensed all of them up, making them have the relationships they did. Their mental stability would not last very long under the circumstances.
In conclusion, the Frank Family originally had a plan to go into hiding. They lived in The Netherlands and wanted to move to Great Britain. Then from Great Britain, they were going to move to USA to be safe from the Nazi’s, but that didn't work out. So, since they weren't able to move and were still living in The Netherlands, they planned to go into hiding. Anne’s parents were already prepared for this. They were planning to go into hiding on July 16. Then one day, Margot was called to a concentration camp. The next day they went into hiding because they felt like it was too dangerous.
